Overview (resum en anglès): | |
"Aviation is the business of freedom," said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA CEO. But what happens when freedom is taken away? COVID-19 took it away for the whole year of 2020. The whole world came to a standstill and borders between countries closed. This led to a near-total decline in air operations, at least for people. Some airlines closed down for good as they could not cope with all the costs without any income, many others managed to cope with the pandemic and survive. In order to be able to understand why this difference exists, this project will first create an airline from scratch. Hypotheses for its creation will be given and the economics behind such a company will also be studied. The balance sheet and the profit and loss accounts will be shown. In this project, a simulation will also be made where the balance sheets of the same airline, previously formed, will be compared, when taking very different financial decisions. A global pandemic is not such a common event, so we will also confront the airlines with more common events. First, the increase in fuel prices, one of the biggest costs for an airline. Then, the reduction of passengers in the peak season. And finally, to a 75% drop in airline operations, which could simulate a global pandemic. All the data used for the simulation, some studies explained in more depth and the simulation as such, can be found in the annexes. Some sections in the body of the document are a summary containing the information that is considered most important, but in the annexes the explanation is much more detailed and precise. |
