Overview (resum en anglès):
The project aims to develop a platform that allows autonomous navigation for electric wheelchairs. It is oriented to offering people with severe disabilities, that can¿t control a wheelchair by themselves, independent mobility from their caregivers in indoor spaces. The platform has the objective to be economically accessible and adaptable to any wheelchair model.
We are going to be working with ROS (Robotic Operating System) for the development of the platform, which offers algorithms for the creation of maps and for navigating autonomously from laser scans of the environment. As hardware, we are going to use low-cost devices that allow the system to be accessible for everyone. During the project, we have worked with different devices: sensors, microprocessors, microcontrollers and the wheelchair, Quantum Q4, offered by ASPACE (Cerebral Palsy Association).
At the end of the project, we have achieved to create a low-cost platform, working with ROS, a Kinect XBOX 360 and Arduino. The possibility for creating maps and navigating autonomously has been validated in our platform successfully.
