This paper deals with the problems of the sustainability of European aviation and various methods for reducing emissions from commercial air operations that affect the environment. European environmental news are studied regarding aviation in terms of air quality and what are the emissions produced by the sector.

Next, the concept of the Single European Sky (and the corresponding SESAR program) is defined as an operational method that helps to reduce emissions through the restructuring of airspace and collaborative management between the agents involved. Within the SESAR program, this work delves into the introduction of the operating method of 4-dimensional trajectories. It is about optimizing current trajectories as a method to reduce flight time and distances and consequently fuel consumption and emissions.

In a second part of this paper, the possibility of replacing different air routes with the corresponding high-speed train lines is studied. It shows the current state of the European high-speed rail network and the policies that apply to the continent. It also compares the environmental impact of the high-speed train with respect to aircraft and other transportation methods.

Finally, a study is carried out on the replacement of different air routes in favour of the respective railway routes for the reduction of emissions. In this last chapter, we study the criteria that users follow when choosing between the use of the train or the plane, what are the environmental monetary costs assigned to each type of issue and the resulting operating costs of the replacement, as well as the verification of the CO2 savings derived from this migration.

It is concluded that both the application of SESAR methods and the replacement by high-speed lines are effective in contributing to the reduction of emissions. The Single European Sky improves the environmental impact by improving operations and therefore results in an improvement of the European air network. On the other hand, replacement by high-speed trains is more complicated due to the lack of infrastructure available throughout the continent
and, in addition, this type of user migration is only cost-effective if the distances to be covered are not very extensive. Therefore, the use of the high-speed train will be favourable only if certain conditions are met and therefore the environmental impact will not be significantly reduced.
