This project studies the need to consider an expansion of Malaga-Costa del Sol¿s Airport (LEMG), located 8 km from the center, being the most important airport in Andalucia¿s region and the fourth largest in Spain. This need arises from the rapid growth of air passenger traffic that the airport has experienced in the past few years, which, according to forecasts and analysis presented throughout the document, the amount of passengers would exceed 20 million in 2026, same that was planned for 2020 before Covid existed, so that the maximum capacity would be reached in 2036.

The airport was commissioned in 1919 and it has evolved over the years until reaching 19 million passengers in 2019, just 100 years later. Bearing in mind the current Plan Director, it is considered the expansion carried out in 2010 with the inauguration of the new terminal together with, in 2012, two years later, the second runway.

According to the Tourism Observatory City of Malaga, considering the report carried out in 2019, before Covid, it is the international market, which represents the 62% of total visits to Malaga and the 65% of overnight stays. In a city where the total supply of tourist places has increased in 2017 from 28,000 to 48,000 in 2019, it is necessary to consider the impact that could have if this supply of accommodation is not accompanied by an optimal airport infrastructure. The airport is the first thing a tourist sees when arriving in a city and the last memory they take with them so, there is an obvious importance of maintaining the quality standards and level of service at the airport as passenger traffic grows.

Currently, the airport capacity is 30 million passengers, 9800 peak hour passengers and 65 operations/hour on the airfield. The study is mainly focused on analyzing the impact of the evolution of demand in the phases involved in the management of operations in such a way that, throughout the project, the fields involved are the study of the environment, the study of the land connections, the airport infrastructure and, finally, the operational field.

Once the analysis of the socio-economic variables based on a multiple correlation study has been completed, an average increase in demand of 4,5% year-on year from 2026. According to the current capacities of the airport, the study confirms that the airport would reach its maximum capacity between 2035 and 2039 in which 30 million passengers per year will be reached.
