Z-Wave protocol was born in 2005 and, in the latest years, its radio interface has been proposed as a new standard for the Internet of Things. After some years, its use and commercialization have been extended and now it is one of
the leading technologies for home automation. It operates in the sub-1GHz band; impervious to interference from Wi-Fi and other wireless technologies in the 2.4-GHz range (Bluetooth, ZigBee, etc.)

The Z-Wave PHY and MAC layers are defined by ITU-T Recommendation G.9959, and they have been summarized and explained in an understanding manner in this thesis. The frame structure, the different data rates and the main
communication modes have been explained, as well as the difference between the devices that form the Z-Wave networks.

After defining both layers, analytical and theoretical performance studies have been carried to compare the behavior of the different physical layer configuration. Delay, throughput and power consumption for the different
working configurations can be found explained with detail in this document.
