Descripció del contingut i pla d'activitats:
The project proposes to investigate, design and implement a data compression process that minimizes the traffic that can be found between an RRH and the computing cloud. The proposed compression process must be easily implemented within a RasberryPI board.
The tasks to carry out will consist in identifying the compression possibilities, analyze the type of signal to be compressed and look for reasonable alternatives that can be implemented. This software, programmed in C, will be incorporated into real RRH and the benefits that are presented in terms of traffic reduction and losses in terms of signal quality reduction will be evaluated

Overview (resum en anglès):
The future Wireless networks, are expected to deliver data rates of hundred of times the current fourth-generation (4G) technology. The candidate to meet this expectation is the 5G network, which utilizes an enormous increase in wireless bandwidths at very high frequencies, utmost network densification, and massive number of antennas.

Distributed base station architecture and Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) will continue to be an important network concept into the next future. Therefore, there is a high need to enhance the data rate of the Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI).
The Cloud-Radio Access Network (Cloud-RAN) architecture is based in defining Remote Radio Head (RRH) elements that include the data acquisition, Radio Frequency (RF) components and antenna system, which connects with the data center through a high-speed interface, Ethernet or fiber based.

One of the big issues related with the implementation of Cloud-RAN concept is the enormous data traffic between the data center and the remote radio head, RRH. There are already multiple algorithms developed to reduce the traffic load between the cloud and the RRH, but as the wireless networks are having improvements, the compression algorithm must be enhanced too.
As a consequence, this project’s purpose is to investigate, design and implement a data compression process that minimizes the traffic that can be found between a Remote Radio Head (RRH) and the computing cloud.

The steps followed consist in first analysing the type of signal to be compressed, and then try different compression possibilities developing compression algorithms and testing them using matlab tools. To assess the final performance of the compression algorithms developed we first address the traffic reduction and then the losses in terms of signal quality.
