SEARCH, ELECTION AND INTEGRATION OF A LONG RANGE AND HIGH
CAPACITY DATA LINK

Some of the projects we are involved in require BVLOS missions
and real time data on the ground; this is why we are looking for
a data link system capable to transmit a high volume of data to
long distances.

Thesis Objectives

Afer the first stage of the internship, the student is already
familiarized and has a better knowledge of the UAV communications
systems and how to integrate them without compromising other
onboard systems.

For the second stage of the internship and the development of the
Master's Thesis, the student will continue the research and tests
with different Data Links and and Payloads onboard.
The aim of the project will be to determine which Data Links,
including frequency, transmit power, antenna placement and
environment conditions are better for a long range and high
capacity link.

Overview (resum en anglès):
This Master’s Thesis is the result of almost one year working on the search, election and integration of a wireless communication data link able to handle high capacity information rates over long range distances between a drone and a ground station.

The need to find a reliable data link comes together with the growth of drone industry. Professionals are entering this sector, as they see the advantages these technologies can offer, such as saving money, saving time, increasing security and increasing precision among others.

This research has been done while collaborating with a company that wanted to develop a system to help firefighters when extinguishing wildfires. This would be done using a professional drone that would carry different sensors to detect hotspots and send their exact locations with high precision to the firefighters ground station in real-time.

Telecommunications weighs heavily in this research, explaining the different systems tested and taking in account antenna integrations and radiowaves behaviour under different conditions. However, the project also focus on how to manage the information generated by the sensors, estimating the amount of data and which is the best way to send it through the link, considering latency and data loss.

Other possible advantages of using a data link between the drone and the ground station have been studied, including alternative ways to control the drone, adding security in case of possible failures.

Doing this project inside of the company has made possible to apply most of the theory to the practice, testing under real conditions and being able to compare the results between different providers.
