Descripció del contingut i pla d'activitats:
Traditionally, the use of electronic mobile devices is forbidden in commercial flights for security reasons, especially during take-off and landing operations. However, modern airliners are well protected against interference caused by passengers’ devices and some companies even offer in-flight Wi-Fi services to provide Internet access through a satellite link or to access multimedia content from local servers, running in the plane itself. Particularities of these scenarios make the deployment of a Wi-Fi network inside a plane an interesting challenge. This project is aimed at revising those challenges, both from a technical and from an economical perspective.

Overview (resum en anglès):
This final degree project has the objective of gaining in-depth know-how about the development of in-flight Wi-Fi systems to be able to carry out an analysis of the data collected by airlines. Since the number of airlines that bet on this system and see it as a source of income is increasing, the aim is to fully understand the means necessary for its implementation.

To do this, we take a tour through all the key aspects that must be taken into account. We start from the statistics that collect the opinion of the passengers regarding the Wi-Fi on-board. We carry out a search that gives us information about the fees that are being applied. Then, we study technical documentation of one specific system to identify each of the necessary elements and their functionality.

By studying the IEEE 802.11 standard and the main characteristics of the protocols implemented in the equipment in the case study, the final analysis is reached in which operating parameters are compared. Through this analysis, we can see which are the limitations of the system and opportunities for improvement.

Finally, the data on the use of the system is analysed, and the economic benefit obtained is compared to the related investment. This dissertation concludes with an improvement proposal based on all the data collected during this work.
