The proposal is aimed to investigate the current fleet management strategies that the airlines apply. The target is to better understand when, how and why each strategy is applied according to the airline characteristics, fleet availability, lease and purchase conditions, etc' And how each strategy can help the airline to be sustainable.
The assessment will target some airlines as example to each strategy, so the pros and cons will be identified thanks to the historical records and evolution of the company. Economic aspects, route definition and maintenance aspects, among others, will be considered to determine the most relevant criteria when dealing with the definition of the fleet management strategy. |

Overview (resum en anglès): | |
This research examines the strategies adopted by airlines to acquire and manage their fleets, with particular focus on the European context. As commercial entities, airlines base their fleet decisions on profitability, market dynamics and operational efficiency. This project shows how fleet strategies affect both airline competitiveness and the commercial aviation sector as a whole.
The study provides an overview of the main stakeholders involved in fleet planning, including airlines, manufacturers and lessors. It also addresses recent global events that have impacted air transport, such as the Covid-19 crisis, supply chain disruptions and regulatory developments. The research categorises strategies into acquisition methods, which include purchasing and leasing models, as well as management approaches such as ageing policies, mixed versus standardised fleets and sustainability initiatives. In addition, the study discusses how external pressures, such as environmental regulations and technological innovation, increasingly influence fleet management decisions. A specific analysis explores European airline fleet ownership structures, revealing trends in ownership models, leasing growth and their relationship with factors that influence economic and operational performance. The analysis first examines aircraft ownership and leasing strategies in 2025, then compares these with 2016, and finally evaluates fleet growth during this period. The findings contribute to a better understanding of how fleet-related decisions are interconnected with sustainability, operational costs and market positioning within the global commercial aviation industry. |
