| Overview (resum en anglès): | |
| This bachelor's thesis analyzes runway excursions during landing, one of the most frequent and critical causes of aviation accidents. The main motivation arises from the need to improve operational safety at airports, especially considering that many infrastructures are outdated and have not adapted to the growth of air traffic or the current size of aircraft. The primary objective of the project is to identify the risk factors associated with runway overruns, study their prevalence and correlation, and propose corrective measures to reduce their occurrence.
The methodology used combines both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Firstly, ten representative cases of runway excursions during landing were selected and analyzed based on official investigation reports. From these cases, recurring variables were identified, such as human errors, adverse weather conditions, crew fatigue, mechanical failures, and infrastructure deficiencies. Subsequently, a structured database was created, and statistical analysis was carried out using R software, including a logistic regression model and a location model to estimate the probability and distance of a runway excursion. The results show that human error and adverse weather conditions are the main triggers of such incidents. Moreover, it is evident that a significant number of runway excursions occur during the landing phase, and that approximately one quarter of the aviation accidents analyzed are related to this type of event. Finally, mitigation measures are proposed, including the implementation of EMAS systems, improvements in crew training and operational protocols, and a review of RESA. This study provides a valuable analytical tool for decision-making in airport safety management. |
