| Nowadays wildfires represent on of the gratest environmental threats that face Spain. Although the number of total fires, according to reports, is decreasing showing a downward trend, their destructive power and impact is inversely proportional. In response to this problematic, UAS have emerged as a revelant solution in these scenarios, and it is within this framework that EXTINCIA arises. Within EXTINCIA, in collaboration with Telespazio Ibérica, borns the present work, with the objective of developing a FMCW radar simulator for UAS detection as the fundation for surveillance and coordination of UAS operating inside an airspace shared simultaneously with VFR aircraft.
Following a review of the state of art, the choise of the FMCW radar has been justified by its continuous detection capability and the abscence of a blind zone, among other characteristics. The system has been designed and implemented through two layers - internal and external - following an iterative design-implementation-validation methodology, which has allowed decisions to be made by the feedback of the results. The internal core of the simulator addresses, through MATLAB, the complete signal processing chain, starting with the FMCW signal generation, beat signal computation, Range-Doppler map construction, noise suppression, detection via CA-CFAR, and micro-Doppler estimation. Additionaly, smoke attenuation and clutter have been incorporated, as these elements are fundamental inside EXTINCIA operational scenario. The external layer orchestrates and manages the various radar instances through multiprocessing, and integrates the internal core via MATLAB Compiler SDK. Finally, the system has been containerised with Docker and integrated with Unreal Engine 5.7 for a realistic simulation of the operational scenario, and with Mission Planner for trajectory simulation, with comunication between all modules handled through RabbitMQ using AMPQ 1.0 protocol. System validation, carried throught two phases - internal core and complete system - has confirmed that the simulator detects and locates targets with precision, incorporating the smoke attenuation and clutter model. The results demostrate that this work constitutes a functional and validated techonlogical fundation for UAS surveillance in firefighting operations, laying the groundwork for proper implementation with EXTINCIA. |
