| Overview (resum en anglès): | |
| The Airbus A380 represented Airbus's most ambitious bid to revolutionise long-haul commercial aviation through a double-deck design conceived to concentrate large volumes of passengers on high-density routes under the hub-and-spoke paradigm. Despite its technical success and the admiration it generated among passengers and industry professionals, the programme was discontinued in 2021, after only 251 units delivered, far below Airbus's initial forecasts.
This thesis analyses the viability of the Airbus A380 throughout every stage of its life cycle, with the aim of determining whether its commercial failure stems from an oversized original concept for the aircraft or, conversely, from an evolution of the aviation market different from the one anticipated at the time of its design. In parallel, the study assesses under which operational and market conditions an aircraft of these characteristics could have remained viable. Methodologically, the study is based on a documentary and comparative analysis with quantitative support, combining a literature review of technical, economic and historical sources with a practical cost-modelling case study applied to a real route (London Heathrow-Dubai), in which the Cost per Available Seat Kilometer (CASK) of the A380 is compared with that of its main twin-engine competitor, the Airbus A350-900. The results show that the A380 has a significantly higher cost per available seat kilometre than newer-generation twin-engine aircraft, a disadvantage that remains practically constant regardless of the load factor achieved. This finding, combined with the greater difficulty of filling an aircraft with almost 500 seats in a context of fluctuating demand and the shift towards point-to-point connectivity models, leads to the conclusion that the A380's commercial failure is due, above all, to a mistaken strategic reading of how airlines' business models would evolve, rather than to a technical design flaw as such. |
