| Overview (resum en anglès): | |
| This study compares the historical development, structure and current capabilities of the European and Chinese aeronautical industries in order to determine the degree of dependence or interdependence between them. The research is based on official statistics, documentation from regulatory authorities, institutional reports and primary sources published by the main companies. It covers commercial aviation, defence and space, together with industrial governance, public financing, certification, supply chains, internationalisation, and the main geopolitical and technological challenges.
Europe consolidated its industry through cooperation between states and companies, with Airbus as its most important outcome, although defence and space remain more fragmented. China has developed a more centralised model supported by state-owned corporations such as COMAC, AVIC and AECC, public financing and extensive domestic demand. As a result, Europe retains a more advanced position in large aircraft design and integration, engines, systems, certification and international support services. China has built a large manufacturing base and acquired the capacity to develop its own aircraft, but its commercial production and international presence remain limited compared with Airbus. The relationship combines competition and cooperation. Airbus is the main corporate link because of its fleet, sales and facilities in China, although Safran, Rolls-Royce, Leonardo and other European suppliers also operate in the country. At the same time, the C919 incorporates Western engines, avionics and other systems whose replacement would require new development programmes, testing and certification changes. Europe faces a different form of exposure, concentrated mainly in the Chinese market, selected manufacturing activities, specific suppliers and raw materials. The study therefore identifies an asymmetric and sector-specific interdependence. China's dependence is primarily technological and affects components that are difficult to replace, whereas Europe's dependence is mainly commercial, productive and material, with greater scope for diversification. Geopolitical tensions may reduce cooperation, but complete decoupling would be costly for both sides. The transition towards sustainable fuels, hydrogen and electrification will not remove these relationships and may instead create new dependencies involving batteries and critical raw materials. |
