| The constant growth of IoT devices has generated the need for seamless global connectivity, overcoming the geographic and coverage limitations of traditional cellular networks. Giesecke+Devrient's IoT Suite platform manages massive fleets of connected devices; however, to serve remote areas and industrial sectors such as maritime transport on large vessels, this Bachelor's Thesis addresses the integration of satellite connectivity through a new provider based on Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites and a satellite bridge.
The main objective of this work is to define and implement a new architecture within the IoT Suite platform to enable the satellite communication model to coexist consistently and transparently with the cellular model. Among the specific developments, key highlights include adapting the device inventory to support ESN identifiers, creating the new "satellite" user role, restructuring Call Detail Record (CDR) processing by introducing a native satellite type to track usage per message, and simplifying data routing using customizable templates in the graphical user interface. The development methodology followed the SCRUM and SAFE agile frameworks, organizing the project into cycles and two-week Sprints. Execution was divided into three phases: a preliminary Proof of Concept for the Mobile World Congress, a production PoC for pilot clients, and the final Version 1.0. System quality and stability were validated through a testing plan ranging from code analysis to the execution of integration tests and cloud End-to-End validations. The results confirm the correct operation of the solution in a real production environment. The IoT Suite platform now enables satellite device provisioning, subscription management, and data consumption monitoring, ensuring high availability in event processing and providing a global, scalable, and sustainable tool. |
