| Overview (resum en anglès): | |
| This work addresses the design, implementation, and validation of an edge computing architecture optimized for service provisioning in connected autonomous vehicles. The project is based on a combination of communication technologies, segmenting the system into a robust control plane over a cellular network, responsible for telemetry and guidance, and a data plane supported by a distributed Wi-Fi infrastructure of Far Edge Computing nodes. To automate application execution, the edge services are deployed as containerized microservices, embedded as pods within a Kubernetes cluster, which handles orchestration and dynamic system resource management. Specifically, two representative services hosted on this infrastructure have been developed: a high-definition video streaming service oriented toward multimedia consumption, and an artificial intelligence inference service based on the YOLOv11 model for real-time obstacle detection.
System validation was carried out through incremental phases, combining tests in a controlled indoor testbed and real outdoor field trials on the Baix Llobregat Campus, at Castelldefels, with FEC nodes deployed on building facades and lampposts. For these tests, an autonomous vehicle prototype developed within this project was used, which features several sensors allowing it to navigate autonomously and react to obstacles. The results obtained through real-time monitoring of the vehicle's on-board computer confirm the viability of the proposed solution. The video streaming service proved to be resilient to handovers between adjacent nodes, while achieving an adequate Kubernetes pod migration time. Furthermore, the artificial intelligence service validated real-time obstacle detection. Finally, the trials highlighted the intermittency and limitations of the outdoor Wi-Fi infrastructure, corroborating the necessity of delegating the control plane to the 5G cellular network. |
