Rail mobility in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) and its surrounding region is marked by a notable capacity imbalance: the conventional Iberian-gauge network is heavily saturated, limiting the travel times and reliability of Rodalies and Mitjana Distància services, while the Madrid-Barcelona-French Border High-Speed Line (LAV) crosses the same territory with substantial residual capacity devoted almost exclusively to long-distance traffic. In addition, access to Barcelona-El Prat Airport currently forces most travellers through central Barcelona, penalising the overall efficiency of the passenger transport system.

Against this backdrop, this Final Degree Project (TFG) designs and computationally models the insertion of a new metropolitan and regional high-speed service of the High-Speed Commuter type, drawing inspiration from international references such as South Korea's GTX model. The proposed corridor connects Martorell Central with Girona via the LAV, with an intermodal stop at El Prat de Llobregat for direct rail access to the airport and a connection to the conventional network at Castellbisbal, where mixed-gauge track allows the new service to operate with standard European gauge without a mechanical gauge changer.

The study is confined strictly to railway planning and operations engineering, aiming to mathematically validate the feasibility of inserting the new paths without conflicting with existing commercial traffic; demand and financial viability analyses are explicitly excluded. The methodology, built on custom Python algorithms, comprises a kinematic integration respecting Adif's Maximum Speed Chart (QVM), the heuristic generation of a bidirectional timetable mesh applying ERTMS separation times, and the Accumulated Deficit method for sizing and rotating the rolling stock fleet.

The results confirm the technical viability of the proposed service: the algorithm inserted 52 new daily services (26 per direction) across the full operating day without conflicting with long-distance traffic, achieving an end-to-end journey time of one hour, eleven minutes and forty-four seconds between Martorell Central and Girona. The Accumulated Deficit analysis determines an operational fleet of 8 units, rising to 10 once technical reserve is included, while sensitivity analysis shows that even a one-minute increase in separation margins substantially reduces achievable frequencies. Preliminary sustainability assessments indicate a favourable long-term environmental balance despite an initial civil-works carbon debt, alongside social benefits in territorial decentralisation and residual risks such as local access saturation. Future research lines include demand and tariff studies, detailed economic appraisal, rolling stock selection, and the civil and electrical design of the Castellbisbal grade-separated junction.
