| Overview (resum en anglès): | |
| The Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged as a key technology for the deployment of smart city applications, enabling the large-scale monitoring of environmental variables through low-power wireless sensor networks. Among the available communication technologies, LoRaWAN has become one of the most widely adopted solutions due to its long communication range, low energy consumption, and suitability for battery-powered devices.
This Bachelor's Thesis presents the design and evaluation of a wireless communication system for environmental IoT monitoring in an urban scenario. The proposed system is intended to support the deployment of distributed sensors capable of measuring environmental parameters such as temperature, humidity and air quality. The study focuses on the Eixample district of Barcelona, selected as a representative dense urban environment. The work includes the definition of the sensing architecture, the selection of the communication technology, and the design of a LoRaWAN network operating in the EU868 band. Coverage and capacity analyses are performed through both analytical calculations and simulation tools. Radio propagation is evaluated using radio planning models and Radio Mobile simulations, while network performance is assessed using the NS-3 simulator. Particular attention is given to key performance indicators such as Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR), gateway capacity, coverage area, and network scalability. The obtained results demonstrate the feasibility of deploying a LoRaWAN-based environmental monitoring system in urban environments, highlighting the trade-offs between coverage, capacity, and reliability. Furthermore, the comparison between theoretical estimations and simulation results provides valuable insight into the impact of propagation effects and network congestion on system performance. The study concludes with an estimation of the infrastructure requirements needed to support the proposed deployment while satisfying the established reliability objectives. Furthermore, the energy autonomy of the nodes is evaluated, demonstrating that the proposed solution can achieve a multi-year operational lifetime through power consumption optimization and the use of rechargeable batteries combined with solar energy harvesting. |
