Overview (resum en anglès):

In the competitive commercial aviation industry, there are numerous forms of collaboration, which have emerged as methods of improvement and survival for airlines. These agreements are divided into three large groups, depending on the level of cooperation.

This project focuses specifically on a method at the level that involves more cooperation; strategic alliances. Its main objective is to achieve the optimization of performance of the airline alliances that currently dominate the market; Star Alliance, SkyTeam and Oneworld. Specifically, it aims at making a proposal for the future that includes the airlines that each of the alliances needs to improve their network reach.

To carry it out, first of all, a theoretical review of the most relevant concepts that directly affect the development of the project is made, which serves as a basis to reach the final proposal.

Secondly, an analysis of the network of alliances is made, mainly from the geographical point of view. Through this, it is possible to detect their strengths and also their numerous weaknesses, useful for establishing the characteristics that future allies should have.

Thirdly, a set of criteria are applied, established from the theoretical study, which facilitate the filtering of airlines. Starting from the more than a thousand airlines that currently exist, a final product is achieved that is fully adapted to the needs of alliances, made up of only 26 airlines.

With the proposal made, the set of the three alliances could manage to strengthen 55% of their weaknesses. Specifically, Star Alliance would correct a maximum of 25% of them, SkyTeam 50% and Oneworld 75%.
