In recent years, the introduction of electric vehicles at all levels of our society has influenced the fact that their use is also beginning to occur in the aviation industry. Together with different factors and projects consolidated by the different organizations and companies, clear support for this type of vehicle is demonstrated given its energy consumption and zero emissions.
The aim of this project is to investigate how the introduction of these new vehicle types will affect the operation on the apron (mainly turnaround process). Moreover, it aims to compare the environmental impact generated by these types of vehicles to those that have conventional engines. To achieve the main objective, searching real data and computing some metrics will be done to find answers and contrast the results reflected in the different scenarios. The specific objectives are as follows: -Analyse the prevailing trend in the aviation sector to decarbonise some of the activities as much as possible (e.g., one-engine off taxiing, application of Sustainable Aviation Fuels, etc.); -Identify different vehicles involved in the turnaround process and estimate their energy consumption; -Create different scenarios which will consider gradual replacement of the the vehicles with traditional engines; -Derive the conclusions by emphasising the benefits of this process and potential barriers for its implementation. |

Overview (resum en anglès): | |
Climate change and the flights' increase have done global organizations to seek solutions for reducing CO2 emissions in the aviation sector. The project focuses on calculating CO2 emissions generated by ground support equipment during the turnaround process at airports.
Additionally, a key objective was analyzing the impact on the emissions reduction integrating electric vehciles into these operations with different tests. Finally, CO2 emissions were calculated based on data provided about the operating fleet. The results offer a solid fundation for adopting more sustainable technologies checking their possible implementation and their economic impact. |
