The thesis concerns the design of a retractable, electric propulsion system for lightweight, single passenger sailplanes. The system would keep the same advantages as a gasoline powered unit. However, most disadvantages would be eliminated: noise, vibrations, pollution and maintenance of the engine. The goal of the project is to find an optimum solution for adequate power and duration of flight, and at the same time keeping the weight of the system as low as possible. By keeping the weight down, the system would not introduce weight and drag penalty, if the batteries are not taken onboard and the system is retracted.
The key tasks of this project: Estimating and choosing adequate propulsion system components (motor, propeller, controller, batteries). Designing the retractable mechanism, using CAD software. The mechanism would utilize composite parts. Goals to achieve: Ultra-low weight (not including batteries) Compact installation (one system could be adaptable to many models of sailplanes in the same size class) |
