Títol: Sailboat model for numerical simulation

Data inici oferta: 10-02-2012     Data finalització oferta: 10-10-2012

Estudis d'assignació del projecte:
    Tipus: Conjunt     Nombre d'estudiants per realitzar-ho: 1-2

    Lloc de realització: EETAC

    Paraules clau:
sailboat, dynamical system, model, simulation, optimisation

Descripció del contingut i pla d'activitats:
A sailboat is a vehicle that simultaneously "flies" in air and water. The dynamics can be modelled by means of the Newton laws, but closure models for the aerodynamic forces on the sail and the hydrodynamic forces on the keel, hull and rudder must be employed. The aim of this project is to model in the simplest way possible the response of a sailboat to wind, currents and sailor commands and to simulate it numerically. Also to understand the effects of some problem parameters on stability and performance and to optimise boat trajectories.

The plan for the project is:
    1) Model a 2d sailboat.
    2) Code a time-stepper to evolve the dynamics.
    3) Analyse the effects of environmental (wind and current) and boat (sizes, distances, aero/hydrodynamic coefficients...) parameters on stability and manoeuverability.
    4) Code a solver to find equilibria.
    5) Analyse the performances.
    6) Optimise trajectories.
    7) Consider ways of extending the project to 3d modelling.
