    The main objectives of the work are:
    1. Understanding the industry of European airports.
    2. Understanding the main concepts of strategic planning, focusing in industries
    with a lot of competitors, high indexes of growth and limited options of increasing
    capacity.
    3. The role of multi-airport systems
    4. Propose an integrated methodology of appraisal airport strategic planning.
    5. Understanding the case of BCN Airport and the new satellite terminal.

    The tasks of the project are:
    1. State of the art and state of practice of airport strategic planning.
    2. Introduce new topics: competition, constrained capacity and high growth.
    3. Propose an integrated methodology for strategic analysis of airports.
    4. Apply to BCN Airport and the possibility of a new terminal.
     
    Overview (resum en anglès):
    In this project a strategic analysis has been carried out for the Barcelona Airport, where first, the benefits that would contribute to define the future of the airport have been determined.

    Secondly, it has also been detailed the current state of the airport, being the first airport in Catalonia, the second in Spain and the seventh in Europe in terms of passenger traffic. Consequently, due to the rapid growth of the airport, it is intended to make a strategic assessment to decide how the airport will be in the future in terms of passenger demand and whether current infrastructures will be able to support growth.

    For this purpose, a forecast of passenger demand has been made for three time horizons (short, medium and long term) with three scenarios (expected, optimistic and pessimistic), in order to predict the number of passengers that will be at the Airport Barcelona - El Prat.

    Once calculated, the three possible measures to adapt capacity at the airport have been studied. The first is the extension of the runway, the second is the creation of more stands and the third is the construction of the satellite terminal.

    As for the analysis of the Airport, it is noteworthy that an internal analysis of the Airport has also been made, contributing the weaknesses, strengths, opportunities and threats to which it is exposed.

    Based on the above data, it has been strategically assessed in a table with the different scenarios of demand and capacities to see what the airport can absorb in terms of demand taking the different measures of capacity in each of the time periods.

    Finally, it is obtained that for a short time it will be necessary a runway extension and the implementation of more stands in the Barcelona Airport. While in the medium and long term, you will need to build the satellite terminal along with the solution described above.
