Descripció del contingut i pla d'activitats:
Point Merge is a new operational concept developed under the SESAR program which aims at the reduction of the wait holdings which are too frequent in congested airports.
This project presents the design of a Point Merge for the Barcelona airport's arrivals, in the airspace over the sea. Three main benefits arise from such design: the reduction of the workload of the air traffic controller, the limitation of the aircraft wait holdings and the palliation of the noise in the populated areas near the airport.
The new design is done using RNP specification, with more precision and more reliability. RNP allows aircraft to follow curved and descending flight paths.
The project designs the new RNP Point Merge approach subjected to the current normative, the historical traffic patterns and current Point Merge designs being developed within some SESAR Solutions, such as gliding scopes of 3.2 degrees instead of 3 degrees.
The phases for its development includes the research about other Merge Points in other airports, the current SIDs and STARTs at Barcelona, and the RNP characteristics. Then, in a second phase, the student will design the approach. Finally the new design will be evaluated. Several tools can be used to evaluate the traffic performance and also the noise produced at specific points on ground. If possible an assessment will be done by an air traffic controller using a simulation tools to obtain expert opinion about the benefits of the design.

    Overview (resum en anglès):
This document consists on the design of a new RNP arrival procedure at Barcelona – El Prat airport for noise reduction purposes.
It is divided in four different parts. First of all it is studied all available technologies and systems that would be possible to implement, analyzing pros and cons of each one, creating the general design criteria for the proposal. Airspace surrounding the airport and the expected impact generated is also discussed in this first block.
After the first stage is completed, three initial arrival procedure proposals are studied following the results from the first block.

At the third block simulations are performed. Starting from the initial 3 proposals, a basic and initial simulation evaluates their feasibility and helps detecting possible operability problems. From this first simulation, a final option is chosen and improved to be tested in a final simulation session with a real Air Traffic Controller.
Finally, in the fourth block it is studied the impact for the final proposal, presenting all simulations’ data and results.
For the simulations, both initial and final, Euroscope software was used. It allowed running simulation sessions with more than one ATCo and pseudopilot positions, saving all the data for the afterwards analysis.
After obtaining simulations’ results, all benefits from an application of a Point Merge System are confirmed, resulting in a validation of the initial objective of reducing environmental impact due to airport’s operations.
