Descripció del contingut i pla d'activitats:
The student will contribute with theoretical and experimental work to the mechanical design of a test cell for an experiment to carry out in a drop tower. The experiment consists in the control of flow boiling by means of acoustic waves.

Overview (resum en anglès):
This project is a collaboration in the realization of an experiment, that will take place in
the ZARM drop tower. Developed in the microgravity laboratory located in the Escola
d’Enginyeria de Telecomunicacions i Aeroespacial from Castelldefels with the objective
to study the effectiveness of the use of acoustic fields for controlling bubbles generated
by boiling under a microgravity environment, with the idea of implement this technology
for controlling the bubbles that can be produced by the boiling of cryogenic fuels used in
space launchers, avoiding the possible malfunctioning of the propulsion systems.
The project is presented with a bibliographic search about some of the results of different
investigations that have been made up to the present, in experiments that try to study the
physics behind the heat transfer and the behaviour of bubbles in numerous circumstances.
Also, the most used methods, for cooling electronic devices in space and how to apply
the technology that we seek to achieve for control the temperature in electronic devices in
space environments.
After presenting the different physical principles that are present in the different tests that
have been carried out in this project, different test in order to understand the behaviour of
bubbles inside a test cell by generating standing waves in a pool boiling experiment have
been made. Also, the document includes the design and manufacturing of different control
elements. Besides, a distribution of the actual components used for the final experiment
within ZARM’s requirements is presented.
Despite the experiment is still in an early state and susceptible to changes, future steps to
guarantee the correct operation of the experiment are provided in the conclusions. Also,
the results obtained in the experimental results section and how to improve certain aspects
of the test cell used in this document will be discussed.
