Overview (resum en anglès): This study is part of the AGREEN project, a research initiative led by Aigües de Barcelona, CETAQUA, and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Its main goal is to assess the use of reclaimed water for agricultural irrigation. The study focuses on analyzing the effects of six types of irrigation water -three reclaimed and three conventional- on the cultivation of cherry tomato (Solanum lycopersicum var. cerasiforme) under controlled greenhouse conditions.
The trial was conducted at the Parc Agròpolis-UPC using a randomized block design with three blocks, 180 plants, and six water types (treatments). Parameters such as vegetative growth, yield, fruit quality, and effects on the substrate were measured. Results showed that irrigation water had a significant effect on plant height, with the highest values found in two waters with quite different salinity levels: water from Corredores de Gavà and surface water from the Llobregat River.
Regarding yield, the well water from the shallow aquifer in Gavà produced the highest values, although the differences were only marginally significant. No significant differences were observed in the number of fruits per plant. In terms of quality, only the soluble solids content (°Brix) showed significant differences, with water from Corredores de Gavà -the one with the highest salinity- resulting in fruits with a higher sugar content.
The results also indicate a progressive accumulation of salts in the substrate, especially in treatments with water of higher electrical conductivity, such as the one from Corredores de Gavà. This salinization may negatively affect substrate fertility in the long term, although it can also enhance fruit quality by increasing sugar concentration. Therefore, management strategies such as controlled leaching and adjustments in irrigation and fertilization programs based on water quality are recommended.
In conclusion, reclaimed water did not show significant negative effects on crop yield or quality, but it did increase substrate salinity, which should be considered to ensure the sustainability of the agricultural system.
