Overview (resum en anglès): This Bachelor's Thesis aims to develop an economic feasibility study for the establishment of an artisanal processing facility dedicated to the production and transformation of hive-derived products in the Garrotxa region (Girona, Spain).
The proposed project focuses on the production, processing, and commercialization of various apicultural products, including honey, pollen, propolis, and beeswax candles, with the objective of increasing the added value of the farm's own production and improving the profitability of the beekeeping operation.
The study considers the current situation of the beekeeping sector at the global, national, and regional levels, as well as the specific characteristics of beekeeping in Catalonia and the Garrotxa region. In addition, the applicable regulatory requirements regarding hygiene and sanitation, environmental protection, construction, and food safety have been analyzed.
Three implementation alternatives are evaluated: the adaptation of an existing building, the renovation of an agricultural warehouse, and the construction of a new purpose-built facility. Using a decision matrix that considers technical, economic, productive, and regulatory factors, the construction of a new building specifically designed to meet the operational requirements has been selected as the optimal solution.
The proposed facility requires an approximate floor area of 300 m² and incorporates all the functional areas required for the production process, including honey super reception, honey extraction, processing of hive-derived products, packaging, storage, offices, and auxiliary services. The layout has been designed according to unidirectional product flow principles, ensuring the separation of clean and dirty areas, ease of cleaning, and compliance with current food safety regulations.
The study includes an analysis of the production process, the selection of processing equipment, the project implementation schedule, and the economic and financial evaluation of the investment.
The estimated total investment amounts to approximately €357,965, including civil works, installations, production equipment, and indirect costs. The economic analysis demonstrates that the project is financially feasible, yielding a positive Net Present Value (NPV), an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 10,19%, which exceeds the assumed discount rate (5%), and a payback period of 13 years, consistent with this type of agri-food investment. In addition, a subsidized scenario supported by rural development grants and public funding programs is analyzed, showing a significant improvement in the project's profitability.
Overall, the study demonstrates the technical, economic, and operational feasibility of establishing an artisanal processing facility for hive-derived products. The project contributes to rural development, the diversification of beekeeping activities, and the enhancement of the value of local agri-food resources.
