Overview (resum en anglès): Antarctic icefishes are highly specialized to the cold and oxygenated environments of the Southern Ocean. Their lack of hemoglobin reduces blood capacity to transport oxygen and raises the energetic cost of maintaining cardiac output. This study assessed the potential vulnerability of Champsocephalus gunnari to historical depth-dependent changes in temperature and dissolved oxygen across the depth ranges occupied by different life stages.
We analysed the historical variability between 1960 and 2020 in the Southern Ocean south of 60°S and across the upper 700 m of the water column, using temperature data from the EN4 dataset. Climatological data of the World Ocean Atlas and an objectively mapped oxygen anomaly dataset were used to assess dissolved oxygen conditions. Environmental patterns were then related to representative depth ranges and age classes of C. gunnari. Resting metabolic rate (RMR) and maximum metabolic rate (MMR) were estimated using published allometric equations, body-mass estimates, and environmental temperature data.
Temperature changes were not uniform throughout the water column. Surface waters showed a cooling trend, whereas intermediate waters (between approximately 100 and 250 m) showed warming with maximum trends of about 0.04 °C per decade. The highest concentrations of dissolved oxygen were found in the upper 100 m with a rapid decline between 100 and 250 m. Oxygen anomalies became increasingly negative after the late 1980s, particularly at intermediate depths. Whole-organism metabolic rates increased strongly with age because of increasing body mass; however, younger fish showed higher mass-specific metabolic rates than adults.
The results identify juvenile and immature stages as potentially the most exposed to environmental change, although through different mechanisms. Juveniles had the highest relative metabolic demands, and immature fish inhabited depth ranges with the most pronounced subsurface warming and negative oxygen anomalies. Current temperatures are still below reported lethal limits for Antarctic icefishes, but sustained warming and reduced oxygen availability may progressively increase physiological costs and reduce the energetic efficiency of C. gunnari.
