Overview (resum en anglès): The cement and concrete industry is responsible for approximately 7% of global CO¿ emissions, mainly due to clinker production, which has driven the search for new cementitious materials with a lower environmental impact. In this context, Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3) has emerged as a sustainable alternative to conventional Portland cement, as it allows a significant reduction in clinker content through the incorporation of metakaolin and limestone filler while maintaining adequate mechanical and durability properties.
The main objective of this study is to develop an LC3 cement incorporating an industrial residue generated during the washing of recycled aggregates from the company HERCAL, promoting the valorization of a by-product currently destined for landfill disposal and thus contributing to the principles of the circular economy.
To achieve this objective, an experimental programme was designed divided into two phases. In the first phase, LC3 mortars containing 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% of metakaolin by weight of binder were produced and compared with Portland cement mortars. In the second phase, the two most representative formulations were selected, and the limestone filler was partially or totally replaced with an industrial residue at replacement levels of 33%, 66%, and 100%. The samples were characterized by means of flexural and compressive strength tests, determination of porosity and water absorption, as well as scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses.
The best mixtures in Phase 1 were those containing 20% and 25% metakaolin, since after 28 and 91 days of hydration they were the only formulations capable of achieving strength and stiffness (MOE) values comparable to those of Portland cement, owing to the development of a denser and less porous matrix. On the other hand, the best formulation in Phase 2 contained 25% metakaolin and 33% HERCAL residue, as the addition of this moderate amount of demolition waste significantly improved the compressive strength.
