Overview (resum en anglès): It's estimated that global municipal solid waste generation will reach 3.4 billion tonnes per year by 2050, making the need to maintain proper waste management and promote a circular economy increasingly evident. In addition, the global food system faces considerable challenges in the future, such as higher food demand due to population growth, climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions, and limited fertilizer availability. This work focuses on the need to find solutions to the current organic waste problem and promote the circular economy by testing the solid fraction of digestate from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) as a fertilizer. In this study, the efficiency of digestate as a fertilizer was evaluated in two horticultural species (Lactuca sativa and Allium cepa) and one ornamental species (Verbena bonariensis). Four digestate treatments were used, with doses adjusted to the needs of each species, two of them supplemented with other waste materials (biomass ash and pruning residues). A commercial fertilizer (Osmocote®) was used as a positive control, along with a negative control.

The results obtained indicate that digestate application favored crop development, although the response varied depending on the species and the treatment applied. Overall, the two treatments containing only digestate achieved growth comparable to or greater than that of the commercial fertilizer, especially in lettuce and verbena, while onion showed a more moderate response. In addition, leachate analysis revealed differences in available nutrients throughout the trial.

In conclusion, the results obtained suggest that the solid fraction of digestate could be an alternative to synthetic fertilizers, maintaining good crop development, especially in verbena, and that the conditions under which the digestate is applied could probably be improved so that it can release the nutrients it contains in an adequate manner. However, in order for it to be used, further studies are needed to confirm its agronomic viability and ensure compliance with legislative requirements.
