Overview (resum en anglès): The bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) is a vegetal species from the Ericaceae family which
grows in high mountain areas. It prefers intense cold rather than heat, but tolerates both
conditions because it is a plant that can live with little resources due to its great adaptability.
Bearberry is a forest plant which receives its name uva-ursi from Latin, which can be translated
as bear's grape, from its small red fruits valued in the bear's diet.
The current knowledge about bearberry is mainly botanic. This medicinal plant has an
ecosystemic and a productive function in medicine. It is mainly harvested in mountainous areas,
as its cultivation is almost non-existent. Its leaves are used for different purposes and in
particular cases in gardening.
This project aims to advance the understanding of how forestry practices might affect bearberry
populations and how the plant responds to harvesting procedures, in order to establish a
foundation for managing this resource. The objective is to ensure that harvesting is carried out
orderly to protect it from uncontrolled collection which could put in danger its survival.
To achieve this challenge, we have worked within the framework of GESTES and IMFOREST
projects sampling two areas with significant abundance of bearberry in the Catalan Pyrenees to
evaluate its behaviour according to different parameters and treatments.
The results showed a 90% lower yield of dry foliar biomass at high tree canopy density (0,2532
t/ha) compared to low tree canopy density (2.4559 t/ha). The orientation also affected dry foliar
biomass yield, being 36% less productive in the northwest aspect (258.37 g/m²) than in the south
aspect (404.03 g/m²). Therefore, low density and a south-facing aspect increased dry leaf
production. The height and fruit production of bearberry were also measured, as they benefit
the potential nesting of the capercaillie.
