Overview (resum en anglès): | |
Unlike the wing of an airplane, nowadays, there are not advanced and reliable computational tools that allow to simulate the behavior of a ram-air parachute wing. This makes it very difficult to predict the flight characteristics of the canopy in an accurate and objective way. The usual followed process is to develop canopies based on previous models whose design and performance aspects are well known and, afterwards, they are tested by professionals that give a subjective opinion about it.
This project wants to offer an experimental method that allows designers to know in an objective and detailed way, how a ram-air canopy flies during its development process. The purpose of this document can be divided into two parts. On the one hand, to carry out a preliminary study of the flight principles and design parameters of a specific canopy in order to make a theoretical approximation of its behavior. On the other hand, to be able to numerically evaluate and quantify the different flight characteristics of the canopy by using a simple and economical methodology. To achieve the mentioned goals, a specific method has been established, which allows, firstly, to make the preliminary study of the ram-air canopy Om-7 in order to comprehend its behavior according to its design and, secondly, to perform a series of flights under the canopy to obtain the data of its flight characteristics. In order to take those measurements, speed and acceleration sensors have been used. Moreover, a dynamometer has also been used. The obtained results indicate that it could be a valid and applicable method during the design and development process, in order to better understand the behavior of a specific ram-air canopy. By doing it, the data can be analyzed and contrasted with the initial design parameters and the expected behavior. However, it is also concluded that, depending on the needs of each project, it could be convenient to add better instrumentation to the tests, or to complement this study with different experiments. |
