El creciente problema de capacidad en el aeropuerto de El Prat abre las puertas a
distintas soluciones para abordar el problema. En este trabajo se estudiara la viabilidad
que tendría en un futuro establecer el aeropuerto de Girona como puerta de entrada de
los pasajeros nacionales y low-cost reduciendo los problemas de capacidad en El Prat.
Se tiene pensado hacer un estudio teórico para ver como se ha implementado esta
situación en otros paises europeos como Inglaterra o Francia y realizar simulaciones que
describan objetivamente si la solución planteada seria aceptable.

Recently, the debate about the need for the expansion of Josep Tarradellas Barcelona - El Prat airport has overcome the media to solve the problematic situation of congestion and delays that is suffering at the ariport. It¿s been a topic of discussion for years in the institutions of government and society, but the proximity of the final decision on the expansion or not of the airport has increased the relevance of the matter.

Owing to the controversy generated by the decision and the multiple currents both conforming and contradictory on the expansion of the airport, it has been decided to decide to analyze and study the viability of a new solution: promote new measures to intensify the relations of the Catalan airport system in order to allow the decongestion of the Barcelona airport with the arrival of flights and traffic to the Girona - Costa Brava airport.

In order to meet the needs, the benefits, the counterparts and the whole that involves the multi-airport systems, it has been carried out a study of the evolution of the systems on a worldwide scale. In addition, as an involved factor, the model of management and governance of European airoports with respect to Spain has been examined, with a special emphasis on how it is the current system used in Spain and how a change could be made with the examples that can be used as a reference for our case of study.

Thus, clearly distinguishing the situation of exceptionality of the Catalan multi-airport system management model in comparison with the other important airports systems, an in-depth study has been carried out of all the outstanding factors of each airport that concluded with the realization of the SWOT of the Barcelona and Girona airports in order to condense all the relevant information filled and understand what measures are convenient to solve the problem.

Consequently, understanding that the lack of competitiveness between the airports of the Catalan system greatly affected the attraction that represents the Girona - Costa Brava airport, both for airlines and traffic, an exhaustive comparison of the period of time in which the airports of Barcelona and Girona could fully return investments destined for expansions to solve the recurrent problem of capacities with measures that would favor competitiveness and improve efficiency in airport management.

In this way, it has been observed that the proposal with which it is intended to solve the problem of capacitats at the Barcelona airport is not beneficial at all with respect to the one concluded at this paper: reducing rates at Girona airport and increasing them in Barcelona simultaneously, together with the intervention of the local governments to individualize the management of each airport, it will allow Girona airport to be a more outstanding option in the Catalan air market, allowing it to attract a suficient amount of market share to solve capacity problems in Barcelona.

However, the analysis reveals the important counterparts that the expansion of the Barcelona airport entails in multiple areas and it is concluded that the best option to end the capacity problems is an improvement in management with the introduction of new tariff measures and the Girona - Costa Brava airport expansion.
