Descripció del contingut i pla d'activitats:
This thesis develops an agent-based simulation of airport express car parking exit operations, focusing on how payment and barrier frictions (lost/failed tickets, assistance requests, payment delays) create queues and spillbacks. The model will test low-cost operational measures-e.g., channel separation (green/red), fast-track rules, guidance and pre-payment options, and staff intervention policies-to reduce congestion and improve user experience before considering costly capacity expansion (additional exit lanes).

Overview (resum en anglès):
The growth of air traffic over recent decades has led to a significant increase in the demand of airport infrastructures. Among these infrastructures, express parking facilities play a key role, as they manage vehicle flows associated with passenger drop-off and pick-up operations near airport terminals. This growing demand may result in congestion, excessive waiting times, and a reduction in operational efficiency, particularly during peak traffic periods. In this context, the main objective of this study is to analyse different management and configuration alternatives for an airport express parking facility in order to optimise its capacity and overall performance.

To achieve this objective, an agent-based simulation model was developed using the NetLogo environment. The methodology was based on the construction of a conceptual model capable of representing the main elements involved in the operation of an express parking facility, including entry and exit access points, passenger drop-off and pick-up areas, and access control mechanisms through barriers. The model input data were obtained from observations of the real operation of the express parking facility at Terminal 1 of Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, considering factors such as vehicle arrival rates, passenger drop-off and pick-up times, and barrier processing times. Based on this reference model, several simulation scenarios were defined to evaluate different strategies aimed at improving both the infrastructure and its operation.

The scenarios were assessed using representative performance indicators, including vehicle dwell times, queue lengths, average travel speed, access utilisation rates, and traffic distribution balance. The results show that the proposed modifications can lead to significant improvements in the overall performance of the system. In particular, measures aimed at increasing access capacity or reducing barrier processing times contribute to lower congestion levels and improved traffic flow. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of an appropriate distribution of vehicles within the parking facility in order to avoid bottlenecks and the underutilisation of available resources.

In conclusion, this work demonstrates the usefulness of agent-based simulation as a decision-support tool in the airport sector. The developed models make it possible to quantitatively analyse the impact of different operational alternatives before their actual implementation, thereby reducing associated risks and facilitating the identification of efficient solutions.
