Overview (resum en anglès):
The present report is part of a study commissioned by the Ministerio de España to the Centre de Recerca en Economia I Desenvolupament Agroalimentari (CREDA).
It assesses the purchasing behaviour of elderly Spanish who are above 65 years old and Carrefour hypermarkets customers. It also assesses the effect of promotion on purchasing behaviour and the environmental impact of promotion.
In 2017, the market was able to incorporate new household buyers. Customers over 65 spent more money in the market, but without buying more products than needed except in Carrefour hypermarkets. The elder population was less influenced by promotion than other age profiles. Elderly people bought fewer promotional products.
Composed dishes (prepared or precooked dishes, among others) was the food category with the largest environmental impact both in the market and in Carrefour hypermarkets, followed by milk and dairy products and then by fish and other seafood. The categories with the lowest environmental impact were starchy roots, tubers and oilseeds, snacks and other foods, and the residual category.
