Introduction:
The CDEI-UPC is a technological innovation center at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), specializing in machinery engineering, applied research, and technology transfer. Its main research lines focus on mobile robotics, with a particular emphasis on agricultural and construction applications. Furthermore, EEABB is one of the UPC schools dedicated to promoting education and innovation in agri-food systems and environmental sustainability. The shared interest in applying robotics and technology to agricultural challenges offers a unique opportunity to create synergies between the two centres to advance precision agriculture and sustainable agriculture.
Project Description and Objectives:
This project aims to leverage an autonomous ground mobile robot equipped with embedded sensors to estimate crop biomass. Specifically, it proposes using computer vision cameras, such as the RealSense D457, and comparing their performance with the RealSense L515. The primary goal is to develop a 3D model representation of the plants that can feed predictive models to estimate biomass accurately. The project will involve:
1) 3D model creation: Using camera data to build a reliable 3D representation of plants;
2) Sensor comparison: Evaluating the performance and suitability of the RealSense D457 versus the RealSense L515 for biomass estimation;
3) Predictive model development: Integrating 3D models into algorithms capable of predicting crop biomass with high accuracy.
The crops of interest include lettuce, fava beans, brassicas, tomatoes, and fruit trees.
Unique opportunity:
This project offers an exciting opportunity to work on a real-world challenge in precision agriculture, combining theoretical research with practical experimentation. Participants will gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge robotic systems, sensor technology, and advanced modeling techniques. By joining this project, you will become part of a dynamic and multidisciplinary team of professors, engineers, and students, contributing to innovative solutions that bridge robotics and agriculture.
