Descripció del contingut i pla d'activitats:
In order to optimize crops and avoid plagues, Wireless Sensor
Networks (WSN) are widely applied in many agricultural
applications. The objective of these networks is monitoring the
condition of crops. These networks can be part of Internet of
Things (IoT).

IoT means that each device is connected to the network, Internet,
to send and to receive data. It is estimated that all IoT
applications, not only in agriculture, by 2022 there could be
around more than 5000 million objects. Many of these devices are
nodes with few resources: little memory, low computing power, low
energy and they are autonomous. They measure physical parameters,
store and transmit to a control centre.

The objective of this work is to develop a network for
agricultural measurements at the ESAB (Escola Superior
d'Agricultura de Barcelona) test fields. The nodes measure
several plantation parameters for monitoring the evolution of the
crops, and transmit the data to a central computer to allow the
monitoring of the evolution of plants.

The important parameters to be monitored in any type of
plantation are temperature, humidity and solar radiation, through
discrete sensors or using weather stations that integrate
different types of sensors. The choice of devices to use must
guarantee the objective of minimizing costs and consumption, and
be autonomous.

Overview (resum en anglès):
The rising tide of the internet of things (IoT) has highlighted many low-power, long-range and low-speed wireless network technologies. The current work deals with the implementation of a hybrid IoT solution tailored for agriculture, taking advantage of the benefits of two LPWAN technologies: LoRa and Sigfox.

The communication between the nodes (sensors) occurs through LoRa technology, and the collected data is transmitted to an information cloud via Sigfox technology. The final data is stored and processed in Amazon Web Service (AWS), providing end-user worldwide access and control.

A data protection protocol has been implemented to prevent unauthorized access, deciphering, and interference with sensor communication. This security system enhances the robustness and the reliability of the system, further augmented by the integration of an energy harvesting system powered by solar energy.

The proposed system is deployed and tested in a greenhouse owned by UPC, in Parc Agròpolis.
