The focus of this project is to implement a low-power 5G Road-Side Unit (RSU) that will be used on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to improve accident management on highways. A drone will be sent where an accident has occurred with two objectives: (i) to act as a mobile RSU, being capable of orchestrating vehicle maneuvers to manage traffic as smoothly as possible, as the drone has a bigger picture of what is happening in the surroundings of the accident; (ii) to produce real-time video transmission using 5G to the emergency services, so they can be more prepared to act in a more efficient way. With this, hardware and application layers consumption requirements will be characterized so potential optimizations techniques could be proposed, avoiding drone performance reduction while also not consuming too much battery in the transmission part. Regulations that are currently in place regarding drone usage and its limitations will also be studied. | |
