| Aerial platforms play an increasingly important role in providing temporary wireless connectivity in scenarios where the communication infrastructure is unavailable or damaged, such as after natural disasters or large-scale accidents. While multirotor UAVs are commonly used for such tasks, their limited flight endurance and high energy consumption restrict their usefulness for sustained network deployment. Lighter-than-air platforms, such as blimps, offer an attractive alternative due to their low power consumption, long endurance, and ability to remain airborne for extended periods.
Despite these advantages, most existing autopilots and ground control stations have been designed primarily for quadcopters or fixed-wing UAVs. They are not well-suited to the specific dynamics, control requirements, and mission profiles of blimps. This creates a gap between the potential of blimps as communication platforms and the availability of appropriate control and monitoring tools. The objective of this thesis is to design and implement an autopilot and a ground control station tailored to a blimp platform, with a focus on supporting missions related to the deployment of temporary Wi-Fi networks. The student will first review the state of the art in UAV autopilots and ground control stations, analysing their limitations when applied to blimps. Next, the student will design and implement control algorithms and a suitable GCS interface adapted to the blimp's characteristics. Finally, the developed system will be integrated and validated through experimental tests, documenting the full development process and assessing its suitability for networking-oriented missions. |
