Descripció del contingut i pla d'activitats:
entrevistas a diferentes científicos , entidades y/o empresas
transversal pudiendo sacar unas conclusiones apropiadas.
conseguido mejores resultados productivos a nivel comercial o

Overview (resum en anglès): This End of Degree Project focuses on the study of the concept of animal welfare in aquatic
organisms, and the ethical, economic, and social repercussions that this concept has nowadays.
In a first phase, the theoretical basis and the existing knowledge about the subject have been
described; what is the definition of animal welfare; how this concept has evolved over the years
and how it can be evaluated and identified. These issues have been addressed in a generic way,
but they have also been deepened and explained more specifically in the case of aquatic animals.
The methodology used in this first part has been, on one hand, the collection and summary of
diverse bibliography and, on the other hand, several interviews have been carried out with
different scientists and entities related to this topic. The analysis of these interviews allowed us
to have an updated, practical, and realistic perspective of the subject, that together with the
most initial theoretical concepts, have completed a wide and transversal vision, of the meaning
of animal welfare.
In a second phase is to obtain a general opinion of society regarding animal welfare. For this
reason, a survey of more than 70 people was carried out, and their answers were statistically
analyzed.
The third and final phase, we wanted to apply these concepts to a real case, such as the
exploitation of cephalopods, which today is a subject of constant debate and scientific research.
We have analyzed the benefits of maintaining animal welfare standards, while improving them,
not only for marketing reasons, but also considering the productive benefits it can bring. In this
sense, several alternatives have been proposed to production protocols that involve a violation
of animal welfare, solutions that prevent episodes of abuse and that while encouraging the
improvement of living conditions of animals, allow a sustainable production and exploitation of
cephalopods.
The general conclusion of this work is that improving the living conditions of animals within the
industrial process is an ethical necessity that society is increasingly demanding. It is important
for consumers to know the different certificates and what criteria each of them uses. There is
also a clear need for more research and innovation into animal welfare, animal behavior and the
indicators that are needed, especially for aquatic animals. With respect to the chapter dealing
with the case of octopuses, it can be concluded that intensive crops can really be very beneficial
for companies economically speaking, but negative from the point of view of animal welfare.
