Overview (resum en anglès): The growth of the global population generates an increasing demand for food and products from the earth. The need for agricultural products applies high pressure to terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, causing irreversible damage. The production of macroalgae, together with the low need for energy and water for their production and their high nutritional values, make them a good candidate, mainly for human nutrition, in addition to other uses such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, livestock breeders and in the biofuel industry.
Taking into account the diverse uses of macroalgae in industry, the objective of this project has been to assess the surface growth of Ulva Ohnoi macroalgae using a photobioreactor. To achieve this goal, fragments of algae have been grown in a photobioreactor, which allowed maintaining the ideal environmental conditions for the growth of algae; the value of the surface of the fragments was obtained by image processing of the samples.
The results showed a maximum growth rate of 0.14 d-1, corresponding to the last period of the first culture (14-21 days). This growth rate compared to previous studies is considerably low, which can be attributed to high pH values inside the photobioreactor, which consequently did not allow algae to fix carbon. In the second and third cultures, maximum growth rates of the order of 0.06 d-1 and 0.05 d-1, were respectively obtained. In both cases, there was a cell death of the culture, produced by the combination of high irradiation and high temperature. This fact brought the culture into a state of photoinhibition that as consequence caused a loss of the initial concentration of chlorophyll in the algae fragments of the 20% in the case of the second culture and 30% in the case of the third culture. In this study, no significant growth results have been obtained that provide sufficient evidence to understand the behaviour and evolution of the growth of fragments, since this would have required more cultures to be done.
