Overview (resum en anglès): Peatlands are unique ecosystems that develop due to the gradual accumulation of organic matter
over millennia in humid and acidic conditions. It is one of the largest reserves of carbon (C) on the
planet and the environmental impact generated by the exploitation and degradation of these
ecosystems is a major problem due to the impossibility of their regeneration in the short term.
The emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) that are released into the atmosphere
through the drainage, burning and degradation of peatlands contribute to global warming and
climate change. To mitigate this problem, we have the obligation to sustainably manage the
resources and waste we generate from our activities. Through the waste recirculation strategy,
the recycling of organic waste and biodegradable matter and the valuing of that waste, we have
the opportunity to reuse these resources for their use as compost or biogas, avoiding
contamination of the soil or water, minimizing waste and maximizing efficiency in the use of
resources as sought in a circular economy.
For these reasons and as a possibility of reducing the amount of peat used in nurseries while using
nearby waste from the system, this study evaluates the influence of bocashi to obtain a substrate
that generates a quality final product. .
5 types of substrates are studied through the weights of the aerial and root biomass of the
seedlings of the subspecies Beta vulgaris var. cicla L. and two other variables are also taken into
account (i) the covering, covering the trays with a plastic cover that does not allow the light to go
through until germination and (ii) the pelletization of the seeds with rock dust, from the
combination of dust of rocks of basaltic origin and phosphate rocks from the company Gaia
Orgánicos of Mexico as geofertilizer.
The objective of the work is to find an alternative substrate to peat for seedling production. For
this reason, a method has been studied aimed at reducing the amount of peat for seedling
production, adding bocashi in proportions of 10%, 25% and 40%. The peat-based substrate used
for the treatments mixed with bocashi is certified organic and is the same as that used for the
organic control. The treatments are compared with two controls, a certified organic substrate
fertilized with the commercial product ¿Labiquantium¿ based on algae and a conventional peat
6
substrate already fertilized. This study was carried out until the plants were 60 days old from
germination.
The results of the growth evaluation indicate that the ecological and conventional control
treatments have been surpassed by various alternative substrates, obtaining T2 (25% bocashi and
75% peat) and T1 (10% bocashi and 90% peat) the best results respectively.
The treatments that were exposed to the absence of light (T) prior to seed germination did not
obtain relevant results.
It was observed that the use of basaltic rock flour or dust (HR) obtained greater root development
of the crop.
