Thousands of plant species are used for medical purposes. The demand for plant extracts on the
world market has grown in recent years, making the regulation of these products paramount for
public health.
The current project has been carried out with the collaboration of the company INFISA (Instituto
Fitológico) dedicated to the manufacture of products of plant origin, plant extracts, essential oils,
essences, aromas and flavors for industry pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food, dietetic, veterinary, as
well as animal feed and agriculture.
In this final degree project, a bibliographic search of the composition, active principles and methods
of extraction of different plants has been made to apply to the laboratory the information found
and to make a qualitative analysis of these.
The results obtained with thin layer chromatography indicate that there are no differences in the
detection of the active ingredients between two extracts made from the same plant variety but an
ecological and a conventional one. Particle size is involved in detection because the smaller the
particle, the better the extraction. In the case of the detection of saponins, it has been concluded
that the method followed is not the right one for the type of product treated, so with the aquos
extract a suitable detection is not achieved.
The methods used to do the practical part of the job are simple as well as economical. These
techniques may be ideal for a local business that needs to do the analyzes quickly and inexpensively.
Key word: active principles, saponins, espectrophotometry, extracts.
