Descripció del contingut i pla d'activitats:
With the massive deployment of fiber to the home technologies, we are now able to have high speed connectivity (>1Gb/s) at our homes. This implies that telecommunication network operators made a huge investment on cabling almost each of our homes. So, they are eager to reuse these deployments for other services that might have high added value, increasing the return of the investment.
Interestingly, when a signal propagates through an optical fiber it undergoes several effects that depend also on the environment (e.g., stress, temperature, etc.). In other words, by carefully monitoring how signals propagate through optical fiber we are able to monitor the surrounding environment.
This is the main driver of this TFM: to design and evaluate a simple and cost-effective scheme for monitoring the environment surrounding optical cables in a fiber to the home deployment.

This TFM is going to be carried out at the Centre Tecnologic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC), in the Parc Mediterrani de la Tecnologia, Castelldefels. The CTTC is a research center focused on telecommunications and there you will work with the Packet Optical Networks and Services (PONS) research unit, that counts with long experience in optical fiber networks and communications, among others.
