The helical antenna is a type of antenna that ideally can transmit or receive circularly-polarized electromagnetic waves (that is; electromagnetic signals rotating in space). This is very advantageous in those practical applications where the relative orientation between the polarizations of the incoming and the transmitted waves cannot be easily controlled, such as, among others, spacecraft communications, satellite communications, animal tracking, or monopulse Radar tracking. Moreover, helical Radar antennas appear well-suited to minimize weather or rain clutter. Indeed, since rain droplets can be viewed as perfect small spheres, electromagnetic waves when reflected from a perfect sphere become strongly co-polarized with the incident waves.
In this work, the working parameters of axial-mode helical antenna parameters, such as diameter of helix, spacing between turns, pitch angle, length of one turn or number of turns, are revisited in order to obtain enhanced wideband frequency, high-gain and high cross-polarization performance. It is of special interest the assessment through intensive computational analysis under which circumstances high cross-polarization discrimination designs can be implemented together with wideband or high-gain designs. The helical-antenna designs under test need to work in axial mode because they offer endfire performance (that is, the main radiating beam follows the axis of the helix). In this work, software packages as NEC-2 , CST studio or Magnus-Antenna are to be used in order to obtain insight into the radiating properties in terms of single helical-antenna parameters. The behavior of composite designs, such as Monopulse Radar Antennas, with 2 or 4 helical antennas, with the optimum values (or similar) obtained for one single helical antenna will also be explored. |
