Experimental and numerical investigation of the mechanical behavior of composite and metal aircraft structures
In this project, a comparison will be done of the response of different metal and composite structures from aircraft airframes. In particular, the static behavior of various joint configurations used commonly as aircraft repair patches and other innovative configurations is analyzed. In particular, all possible combinations involving aluminum/composite material as substrate/doubler, with different joining techniques (i.e., mechanical fastening with rivets, adhesive bonding and hybrid bonding) are studied. The research is performed by means of Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The procedure and tasks will be approximately as follows: 1. Literature search and review of relevant bibliography 2. Formation on suitable software (e.g., 3Dexperience and SolidWorks from 3DS, Abaqus, Helius Composite Tools, FRANC2D, FRANC3D, etc.) 3. Numerical analysis/Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of the problem: a. design of the CAD geometry or geometries b. meshing of the geometry or geometries c. definition of the physics of the problems and the boundary conditions d. definition of the solver settings and solving of the problems with suitable solver e. post-processing and analysis of the obtained results 4. Processing of FEA results: calibration of numerical results from FEA with experimental results, comparison of results, etc. 5. Draw conclusions from the study, write thesis, and prepare final presentation |

Orientació a l'estudiant: | |
It is highly recommended: 1) to have good knowledge about structures and materials science and technology, e.g., aeronautical Al alloys and composite materials, as well as the microstructural phenomena and mechanisms that govern the mechanical behavior of these materials, etc.; 2) good predisposition and motivation to carry out experimental and numerical/simulation work in projects related to this topic; 3) good bibliographic search capabilities in scientific databases. | |
