IEEE 802.11, indoor positioning, Wi-Fi RTT, Android 12

Descripció del contingut i pla d'activitats:
Few years ago, Google included IEEE 802.11mc technology in
Android O.S. This amendment was addressed to provide positioning
capabilities to the Wi-Fi network so that indoor positioning,
where GPS is known not to work properly, becomes possible. Thus,
android devices are able to compute the round trip time (RTT)
from their location to the place the access points (APs) are.
This RTT can be easily turned into a distance measurement and
subsequently used for position computation.
In Android 12, two additions have been included to the Wi-Fi
positioning capabilities:
1. One way RTT. Although Android allows the IEEE 802.11mc
technology to be used, it still requires device manufacturers to
support the technology. This means that not all the mobile
devices nor APs support this technology. This is why Google
recently introduced in Android 12 the capability to estimate the
range between a station (e.g. a mobile phone) and an access point
even though they do not support IEEE 802.11mc. This comes with a
degradation of the accuracy, which needs to be assessed.
2. Burst size. Before Android 12, all the IEEE 802.11mc involved
a fix-sized burst that consists of 8 FTM frames. This means that
in order to get one single RTT estimation, a total amount of 8
FTM frames were required to be exchanged. Android 12 allows to
set a specific burst size. Since the more location traffic, the
less throughput for regular communication services, the impact of
the burst size needs to be evaluated.
An Android application will be used to gather the information
required to assess the new features introduced by Android 12 in
terms of Wi-Fi positioning. These data will be further
statistically processed and machine learning algorithms will be
applied to refine ranging estimation and assist positioning.

Objectives:
- Assess the accuracy of the one-way range estimation procedure
addressed to non-compliant devices.
- Improve the analysis on the impact of the burst size obtained
in a recent study.
