This thesis work will be carried out within the European Project
SUSTAIN (Smart Building Sensitive Daily Sentiment), where the UPC focus is in the design and implementation of light, thermal and radiofrequency energy harvesters to power autonomous sensors placed inside buildings. In this particular work the final aim is to harvest thermal energy with thermoelectric generators (TEGs) from hot/cold water pipes used in the HVAC system of the UPC Baix Llobregat Campus located in Castelldefels. The main tasks to be carried out, totally or in part, and upon agreement with the supervisor, are: - Literature review about TEGs and heat sinks - Selection of commercial TEGs - Heat sink selection and/or design for the selected TEGs - Attachment of the heat sinks to the TEGs - Laboratory characterization of the commercial TEGs with a thermal plate - Temperature measurement of hot/cold water pipes - In situ characterization of TEGs attached to the hot/cold water pipes - Heat transfer simulation (with COMSOL Multiphysics software or similar) Previous knowledge: It is advisable that the student has some knowledge on some or all of the previous topics: - Basic knowledge of electronic circuits - Use of basic electronic instrumentation - Peltier and Seebeck effects. Thermoelectric generators - Simulation software for fluid flow and heat transfer, e.g. COMSOL Multiphysics - Simulation software for electronic circuits, e.g. Proteus or Multisim |
