| Background.
User/device positioning based on multiple Radio Access Technologies (RATs), e.g., cellular 4G/5G mobile systems, WiFi, and Ultra-WideBand (UWB), is receiving increasing attention in research and standardization communities, due to the high expectation toward location-based services in outdoor and indoor scenarios. When focusing on 5G, research activities have started only recently and have been mostly based on simulated data. However, the possible use of Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) requires to test the accuracy and complexity of positioning solutions through data collected in real networks and deployments. Project and Objectives. In this Thesis, you will contribute to key activities being carried out within the DISCO (Distributed Intelligent Systems and Communication) team at Karlstad University (KAU) in Sweden. The main objective is to perform a data-driven design, evaluation, and analysis of user/device positioning systems based on multiple RATs. Towards this goal, you will: (a) start your investigation by exploring data previously collected in Sweden and Italy; (b) perform a new measurement campaign at KAU, where multiple RATs are currently available (i.e., outdoor 4G/5G commercial networks, an indoor 4G/5G private network, the indoor WiFi campus network, and an indoor UWB testbed); (c) use the dataset, collected through advanced measurement tools, to understand the propagation characteristics of each RAT, (d) design/evaluate positioning systems based on the fingerprinting technique, where different ML and DL algorithms can be used in the position estimation task. This thesis will be developed at KAU, so you need to apply for an internship or an Erasmus mobility period. Currently, we are people from three different institutions (UPC, KAU, and Roma La Sapienza, Italy) collaborating together on this project. Depending on the outcomes, we will plan for possible publication(s) of (parts of) your work, where you can be included as an author.
