| Magnetic fields are ubiquitous in our everyday lives, generated by permanent magnets or electric currents. Our Earth, other solar system planets, the Sun, and solar-like stars all exhibit internal plasma motions that drive large-scale electric currents, turning these astrophysical bodies into giant natural magnets. This process, known as the dynamo effect, is vital for life on Earth: while the Sun constantly expels charged particles driven by its magnetic cycle, the Earth's magnetosphere acts as a shield against this solar wind (manifested visually as auroras).
In my research, I model the generation of these fields through large-scale Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS), solving the coupled magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations: Navier-Stokes and Maxwell equations for conductive fluids. The resulting flows are inherently complex, turbulent, and non-linearly coupled with the magnetic fields they generate. These simulations are done on high-performance computing (HPC) clusters, and require sophisticated numerical and diagnostic techniques for their analysis. To extract physical insight, the simulated flows and fields are decomposed into coherent spatial structures. Once dominant structures are identified, their non-linear interactions can be analyzed statistically - extracting temporal and spatial spectra, or dynamically, through data-driven reduced-order modeling. Depending on your interests, this project offers flexibility to focus on one or more of the following directions: (i) Numerical modeling of the magnetohydrodynamic dynamo process (ii) Analysis of coherent structures and their reduced-order modelling (iii) Neural network reconstruction of dynamo structures (iv) Physics-informed data discovery of dynamo models from observational solar magnetic activity data. Through this project, you will develop advanced skills in the data-driven analysis of multiphysics and complex fluid flows, expertise highly transferable to both academia and industry roles. If you are interested in discussing potential thesis topics, please feel free to reach out. |
